Christ was crucified because he would have nothing to do with the crowd (even though he addressed himself to all). He did not want to form a party, an interest group, a mass movement, but wanted to be what he was, the truth, which is related to the single individual. Therefore everyone who will genuinely serve the truth is by that very fact a martyr. To win a crowd is no art; for that only untruth is needed, nonsense, and a little knowledge of human passions. But no witness to the truth dares to get involved with the crowd.
A lot of people are not comfortable being apart from the group, from the whole herd, and listening to the inner voice. They just follow what the crowd does and wear what the crowd wears and think what the crowd thinks. They get very caught up in doing what the world says is the cool thing to do and living the way the rest of the world lives. Once we make a decision to break away from that and not be part of the herd anymore - by going inside and finding our own voice - then life just becomes magical.
I can't really hear the audience applause when I'm on stage. I'm totally immersed in the piece. But sometimes I get a lot of it and wonder, "Now, why did they applaud here?" If it's a white crowd, they usually applaud because they think it's a pretty movement. If it's a black crowd, it's usually because they identify with the message.
My fondest memories were watching the Beastie Boys get prepped to come on stage. They had a lot of antics and they play a lot of basketball... then they were giving out cameras to the crowd, and performing from the bleachers. The most important thing I learned was that you control your crowd, not the other way around.
I AM NOT THE SON OF GOD AND I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE IF IT SPEAKS, THEN IT CAN BLEED AND IF IT'S GREEN, THEN IT CAN BREAK THE TYRANNY OF THE VOICE IN THE VOICE OF THE CROWD THE CROWD, THE CROWD I'M NOT STRONG, I'M NOT PROUD BUT IF IT'S SMALL, YOU CAN PULL IT DOWN DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN THE TYRANNY THAT'S HURTING ME THE TYRANNY THAT'S HURTING ME AND ALL I WANTED WAS YOU AND THE SWEET RELIEF OF DEATH AND ALL I WANTED WAS YOU AND THE SWEET RELIEF OF DEATH
After you do a joke a few times, you have material that you know works. Although sometimes I have a joke that has worked a bunch of times and then one night it'll flop. And that's when I really take a hard look at myself and say: 'Well, that crowd is obviously wrong. That crowd has absolutely no idea what it's talking about.
